Over the years, the technological advancements in artificial intelligence have been praised as a major step towards achieving great success in technology. Nonetheless, artificial intelligence has received criticism in equal measure. Technology has eased our lives, for example in communication through advancements in mobile phones and in our hospitals, especially during the technical procedures. However, artificial intelligence undergoes the same racial biases as human beings. Artificial intelligence can be forced to make important decisions, for example, in the determination of who lives and who dies depending on the condition.
Erick Schmidt, the former CEO of Google says that whether we like it or not artificial intelligence is going to be present everywhere as we advance to newer generations and he describes the moment we are in as a watershed. Erick was the first software manager at Sun Microsystems in the ’80s and the CEO of former giants in software Novell in the ’90s. He became the CEO of Google in 2001 and later served as the chief executive chairman from 2011 to 2017. Schmidt has turned his attention to Artificial intelligence since he left Google.
Together with his associates (Henry and Daniel), Schmidt has published a book on the age of artificial intelligence and how it will transform the major experiences of the globe. Atlantic executive auditor interviewed Schmidt during the Atlantic festival and he offered an insight into how this transformation will take place. With proper advancements in search engine optimization, this technology will be available to everyone and will be applied in various sectors of our economy. Artificial Intelligence Revolution will be Bigger than the Internet
According to Schmidt 5 or 10 years from now, things will be quite different majorly because this is the beginning of a new era in human civilization. The transformation from old age to modernity in the 15th and 16th centuries where people realized that everything did not descend from God, that some things required human effort to exist, that we could criticize each other. The same notion should be used to perceive artificial intelligence which its arrival is such a watershed moment. Schmidt claims that the artificial intelligence revolution will be bigger than the internet, smartphones, and the social media revolution. Schmidt likens the coming of artificial intelligence to social media, a couple of years ago no one would have imagined all of us on a single platform, it has helped shape the electoral system and the views of most underrated fellows have also been heard via this platform. Well, AI will also be helpful in a myriad of ways.
The AI co-existing with human beings brings forth a major question. For example, what if the hub was designed by a racist, how will we be able to live with such an object in our midst, Schmidt responds to this by narrating that what if it is the warmest, caring, loving and most responsible thing you’ve seen, will you allow your child to be raised by it. In the wake of AI, we have to consider that it will have both positive and negative impacts on society. The focus is on reducing the negative impacts and increasing the positive ones.
The four points which make the AI powerful and problematic will include; their dynamism in that they are subject to change every time. The systems are emergent in that their combination leads to various results i.e., both bad and good behaviors, and lastly their learning capability. In the ministry of defense, the use of AI allows for the detection of weapons that humans cannot be able to comprehend. It gives the direction of how you should retaliate in a war. The general point in AI is that when used appropriately then it serves humanity since it is a powerful machine. However, if applied inappropriately it can cause mass destruction more than a nuclear weapon. In summary, going to war with nuclear weapons can lead to disaster or victory depending on how the weapons are used.
How to Limit Artificial Intelligence
A small number of countries will master the technology of AI and discussions should be in place on how to limit them, the recommendation is that those discussions be bilateral. The general assumption is that when these systems emerge they will be under control from large governments such as those of China and the USA. This will ensure proper applications of this system and control its negative impacts on humanity. To avoid situations where an explosion occurs first before a treaty, these discussions should commence now. With this new age of dangerous weapons, we need similar strategies that were used in the post-world war era.
If AI weapons fall into the hands of terrorists, controlling them will be difficult. For nuclear weapons, the US invested in Los Alamos Center which kept them ahead for about 4 years. The case with AI is dangerous since most of the countries are almost in equilibrium with the USA as far as technology is concerned. Restricting terrorists and controlling them after the adoption of this technology will be a major problem to the whole world, most specifically the developed countries.
Artificial intelligence is pivotal in pattern identification and finding exceptions. So basically they are observing the patterns of humans and coming up with things that align with their pattern. For example, when you know how to identify your search history then AI can give you your next search. With the knowledge of your ads, AI can give you your next ad. But now extrapolate these to the study of human behaviors and the weaknesses; it will have a major impact on our daily discussions for example conflict resolution, electoral justice, and even climate.
The ability of AI to comprehend and summarize serious scientific knowledge can be applied in moving biology forward; it can also be used in furthering drug discovery and in other general science fields. This can help in controlling the explosion of knowledge in science. A computerized system that can handle the practical procedure and use the chemical required inaccurate measures provide the results and analyze findings have been put into place. This helps the scientists who are investing in the discovery of new therapies to the daily advancing human illness.
Artificial Intelligence will be as Good as Humans in all Fields
Speculation has it that in the next ten years, AI will be as good as humans in all fields. However, for the rest of our lifetimes, there will be tasks that are uniquely human and cannot in any way be comprehended by AI. If AI is considered deeply it is only replacing menial jobs, it cannot replace Lawyers, Columnists, Writers, and other great jobs which require absolute brilliance. This explains why even with the intensive invention in technology, humans cannot be fully replaced by computers; humans are the ones to operate these inventions and not the other way round.
The most visible places that will be left for human beings include; creative ability, computers cannot improvise new methods of dealing with emerging issues, sense of morals, and humans sense of spirit. This evolution in technology will be very difficult to take in by this generation but will eventually be implemented.
